Success for Catholics in Business

The official launch of Catholics in Business took place on Wednesday 13th March 2013, with enthusiastic – if not surprising – support from the business community.

‘Some people said, “don’t get involved with business”, Father James Grant, Catholics in Business founder, reports. ‘But the business community has been great in answering the call to help others.’

While some might find this surprising, not so Father James. ‘Business is about being creative and making things work. And these people all put their hands up to do something constructive.’

‘Over eighty people came to our first lunch. We got sponsorship from Olianda Foods and there were representatives there from Melbourne Victory football Club, Myer, Crown, the Hyatt, Collins St Brokerages, the State Parliament, builders, advertising agencies and more.’

The launch’s speaker was Tim Watson: former Essendon football captain, St Kilda coach and now sports journalist with the Seven Network.

Tim spoke about being a young recruit in the VFL, moving out of home and the faith and support of his parents. He also talked about the various obstacles he’s encountered in life and how he has dealt with adversity; including a stressful time coaching St Kilda. Finally, he had insights into the contemporary Australian sports media landscape and what has been happening at the Essendon Football Club. The lessons that Tim has learned have in turn helped his son Jobe (Old-Xaverian, Essendon Captain and Brownlow medalist) today.

‘We had a signed football jumper, meals and hotel get-aways for auction. It was a really great day in support of a good cause – building a school for kids in India,’ said Father James. ‘We hope we can do even better next time, with more people coming along from the business community in Melbourne.’
