Bernie Brookes Lunch Big Success
Myer’s CEO Bernie Brookes was the chief speaker at the second Catholics in Business lunch on 12th June, with Corporate leaders from across all business sectors joining us for lunch at Crown.
Mr Brookes was generous in sharing of some of the tools he’s used to bring one of Australia’s leading retailers back into profit, some of which included:
• Getting back to simple processes: e.g. having one page of notes for board meetings. It’s surprising how much business you do with yourself, so make those processes simple.
• Good news traveling too fast: you may hear all the things that are going great, but sometimes your staff are afraid to share with you the bad news. The bad news must travel faster than the good news.
• Internal transparency: knowing sale figures, profits, and other measurables is essential by department and store. Sharing them, is a vital part of measuring success and where things need to improve. Today Myer have signs at the back of the stores that show how they are tracking.
More business tips were shared which aren’t included here – but of course that was a benefit of attending the lunch.
In addition to this, Father James Grant announced an upcoming pilot project for young adults to receive valuable job training in state of the art facilities at Crown in conjunction with CIB.
‘We won’t be replicating the excellent youth work being delivered by others but will focus on an unmet prevocational need that has the potential to lead to employment. Our heartfelt thanks to Crown for supporting this initiative through the use of their facilities.’
We are also deeply grateful to the generosity of Mr Frank Costa who accepted our invitation to host our next lunch which will be held at Crown in October.
Finally congratulations to the winners of our Auction and Door Prizes. Thank you to Andrew Roper from Wines to the Stars for supplying magnificent wines, Myer for the $100 gift voucher, Crown for a great night in town and Melbourne Victory for the signed football.
